From Lean Initiatives to 3D Printing: Celebrating Our Trusted Advisor

In the dynamic and demanding landscape of plastic injection moulding, Hymid is going from strength to strength, but we feel it is equally important to recognise those who are helping us get there!  Since our inception, we’ve collaborated with a number of core suppliers, advisors and development partners.

One of these has been with us since 2005 and has helped us to continually take the next step to develop our business; the South-West Manufacturing Advisory Service (SWMAS).

SWMAS are a dedicated team of manufacturing and business development experts on a mission to help transform South-West manufacturers into world-class businesses. They have had our back for some time now, and we’d like to give them some much-deserved credit!

Building A Foundation…

In 2005, Hymid approached SWMAS looking for assistance in getting our ducks in a row. First on the agenda was the implementation of Lean Methodologies to help us optimize our operation. SWMAS helped streamline Hymid’s processes through Lead Simulation and ‘5S’ exercises, which allowed Hymid to consolidate from three business units into two, achieving cost-effectiveness.

However, SWMAS’ strategic management focus emphasized the need for new premises, as we began to outgrow our original site in Brixton. This eventually led to Hymid’s move to our current location here in Torquay. This was a significant step on our growth journey and one we may not have made without SWMAS’ advice.

Scaling Up and Diversifying…

With a state-of-the-art production facility commissioned and new operating processes in place, Hymid were now able to scale up. Hymid worked with SWMAS to set up a three-shift pattern, securing a grant for staff training. Value Stream Mapping (VSM) became a crucial tool for business improvement, enabling Hymid to identify and capitalize on areas across our manufacturing processes.

Investing in employee potential, Hymid undertook Leadership Training provided by SWMAS, which led to a positive shift in the company culture. This momentum continued with staff acquiring Six Sigma certifications.

The business then expanded into the medical market with SWMAS’ support, obtaining the necessary ISO13485-2016 Medical Devices accreditation; a huge step forward in Hymid’s operating capability.

Investing in Innovation and Sustainability…

As Hymid aimed to meet this increased demand, SWMAS provided insights for investing in state-of-the-art injection moulding machines and the introduction of 3D printing technology. Optimized production processes, particularly for medical sector applications, were then introduced with the help of SWMAS, showcasing their commitment to innovation and business development.

A core principle of Team Hymid is our commitment to the ongoing development of our people. This is something that SWMAS has continued to support us with. Training programmes such as the Operational Leadership Programme (supplied by SWMAS) are extremely beneficial for new Shift Supervisors and Junior Managers and help introduce new leaders to strategic thinking and man management.

SWMAS’ strategic planning sessions, Lean Simulations, and general business advice have helped cultivate a culture of continuous improvement at Hymid. Looking ahead, SWMAS will continue to support Hymid’s journey. We’re in the process of addressing and meeting our Net Zero targets, with help from SWMAS’ Make It Net Zero programme. Regular sessions are planned, ensuring a strategic alignment between current and future operations.

A massive THANK YOU from Team Hymid to SWMAS for your help and support thus far, and we look forward to continuing our great professional relationship into the future!
